Association «North-Centre» is one of the organizers of the V International Winter School within BPEN «Peace, human security and migration in the Arctic».

On November 27 – 30 the V International Winter School in Petrozavodsk took place. The School was held for the fifth time, and «Barents Peace Education Network» remains at the foundation of our cooperation. Petrozavodsk State University, Karelian Research Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences (KarRC RAS) and Association «North-Centre» were the organizers. 
 

Lecturers were the professors from University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway, Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov, Petrozavodsk State University, as well as by the experts and representatives of international organizations. During the school, the participants have discussed issues of peace, sustainable development, cross-border cooperation, migration and indigenous peoples in the Arctic region.

 

This year the lectures were presented by Christine Smith - Simonsen, Director of the Centre for Peace Studies, University of Tromsø; Kara Kathleen Hodgson and Mohammad Salehin, University of Tromsø; Oksana V. Zaretskaya, the Head of the World History Department, Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov; Alexandra A. Smirnova, Director of Association «North-Center»; Ekaterina A. Shlapeko, research fellow of the Institute of Economics, KarRC RAS; Varvara Markova, archivist from the National Archive of the Republic of Karelia. The excursion-lecture was held by Ilya M. Solomeshch, associate professor, Department of World History, Political Science and International Relations, PetrSU. The role-play the simulation of a crisis in the Barents region was guided by Benjamin Schaller, research fellow of the Centre for Peace Studies, University of Tromsø.
