Sustainability Under Pressure: Environmental Resilience in natural and cultural heritage areas with intensive recreation (SUPER)

2-year SUPER project focuses on 4 unique UNESCO natural and cultural heritage sites in Republic of Karelia and Finland:

Kizhi State Open Air Museum and its buffer zone with more than 20 villages

North Karelia biosphere reserve in Finnish – Russian border region (National parks Koli and Petkeljarvi)

Vodlozersky biosphere reserve and national park, including Kuganavolok village

Rokua Geopark located 100 km from Oulu and Kajaani cities

The project aim is to deal with weak or uncertain environmental resilience of the unique pilot territories with the high recreational load.

The sites are attractive and visited by numerous tourists, which makes their environmental resilience vulnerable to the intensive recreation side effects. Moreover, there are issues of the weak infrastructure and poor knowledge about environmental risks, sustainable development, waste management and traditional landscapes support.

The project activities are aimed at:

Research of the pilot areas to improve the environmental monitoring and nature management systems

Infrastructure and waste management system improvements in pilot areas

Educational activities for locals and specialists on the proper waste management
